Thanks to the Legislative Watch made possible by your membership in the AMTA Wisconsin Chapter, an effort in Madison to delicense massage therapy (and other professions) in Wisconsin was averted.
Our state's Massage Therapy and Bodywork Affiliated Credentialing Board updated the list of Unprofessional Conduct and finished the administrative rules creating the Continuing Education requirement that goes into effect with your next license renewal March 1, 2015.
AMTA-WI Government Relations is soliciting your feedback and suggestions for future changes to the massage law. Please add your suggestions in the comments for this post, or submit by email.
A few of the suggestions already submitted:
Enhanced scope of practice to include stretching during session and instruction for home care, kinseiotaping. Of course as with any modality, one would still be required to practice massage therapy or bodywork therapy within the scope of the license holder's competence, education, training, and experience.
Ability for law enforcement officer penalty-enforcement of unlicensed practitioners, allowing police to cite and District Attorneys to prosecute. Currently all complaints are handled through complaints to the Massage Therapy and Bodywork Affiliated Credentialing Board. This could could be a good tool for law enforcement to protect the public through greater ability shut down individuals using the practice of massage as a front for illicit activities. It could also serve to help avert or fight city ordinances regarding Massage Therapy establishments and practices, such as the one in Eau Claire with an annual $275 fee.
